The 2002 growing season started early with a warm spring and bud break a couple of weeks ahead of normal. The very warm summer days coupled with the cool nights allowed the grapes to develop very concentrated ripe fruit flavors. The early start to the growing season was reflected in a harvest that started several weeks early in late August and was completed by mid September. Low yields in the vineyard along with low-vigor growing techniques enabled the grapes to develop the concentration and depth of fruit that is a trademark of our Red Mountain Estate Vineyard. The shallow calcium carbonate-rich soil of Terra Blanca Estate’s Block 3, Block 4, and Block 9 plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon provides the base for our 2002 ONYX. Estate-grown Merlot was selected predominantly from Blocks 1 and 2 which tend to have slightly warmer micro climates than our other Merlot plantings. Blocks 1 and 2 also typify our Red Mountain Estate Vineyard with their high levels of calcium carbonate-rich layers found in the rocky soil. The result is a rich, earthy chalkiness imparted in our wines. Stressing the Estate vines through defi cit irrigation practices and cropping our Estate Vineyard at very low crop levels of 1.75 to 2.5 tons per acre intensifi es the fruit concentration. Careful selection of harvest times by flavor development in the fruit assures that we get the fl avors and concentration we desire in the vineyard. We craft Terra Blanca’s wines in the vineyards and allow the character of the fruit to defi ne the resulting wines. The grapes are hand picked at the optimum fl avor profi le and delivered to our estate winery within minutes of harvest. Estate-grown Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot complete our 2002 ONYX blend.
